jennukes for listening and encouraging, and
pixie_on_acid for putting up with endless angsting over this fic. This is not a pairing I’ve ever written before, so I needed a lot of encouragement.
You Can't Hide
Kate woke to long fingers trailing down her side. She fought the urge to giggle; she was not a woman who giggled. She grumbled instead: “Do you want to cut that out?”
“What if I don’t?” His voice was husky in the morning; it always made her shiver a little. She kept her eyes closed tight and her back to him.
“We’ve been over this, Agent DiNozzo. You don’t want to challenge me. You know I can take you.”
He began to kiss along the back of her neck. “I think you proved that last night.”
“Keep that up, and I’ll-” Kate’s playful threat was interrupted by a loud pounding on the door.
“DiNozzo!” Gibbs stormed through the door, giving Kate just enough time to duck under the covers. “Get your ass up. We can catch a flight home if we can get to the base in under thirty minutes.” He barked at Tony over his shoulder as he walked to the door of the adjoining room and began to knock, a bit less violently. “Kate!” When there was no answer, he began to open the door.
“Uh… Boss? Why don’t you go pack? I’ll get Kate up.” Tony reacted quickly, but not quickly enough. Gibbs looked in the door at Kate’s empty room and unused bed, then slowly turned to study Tony.
Gibbs voice was quiet and calm. “Special Agent DiNozzo. Special Agent Todd. I will expect you both in the hotel lobby in exactly five minutes.” He walked out, closing the door softly behind him.
“Oh, God.” Tony ran a hand through his hair and looked down at Kate as she emerged from the blankets. “We are so dead.”
The flight and drive back to D.C. were miserable. From the moment Gibbs met them in the lobby until the moment they reached the office – four hours – not one word was spoken. Tony was going nuts. A few times, he opened his mouth to speak, but the glare Gibbs shot him froze him in his tracks. Tony couldn’t remember a time he’d ever been so uncomfortable that didn’t involve his mother making drunken passes at waiters.
As they stepped off the elevators, Gibbs began stalking towards the stairs. “I’m going to talk to the Director. Write your reports and go home.”
Tony and Kate sat down at their desks and stared at one another.
Tony broke the silence. “He’s terrifying when he’s this quiet.”
Kate looked upstairs pensively. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen him this mad.”
“What do you think he’s talking to the Director about?”
Kate looked at Tony in surprise. “The case we just closed.”
“You think so, huh?”
“What do you think?”
Tony looked up toward the Director’s office then back at Kate. “I think he’s talking about firing me.”
Kate raised an eyebrow. “You? Why you?”
Tony rounded the desk and stepped close enough to Kate to whisper. “Uh, remember this morning?”
Kate made a face. “I was there, Tony. Of course I remember. I mean, why just you?”
Tony raised an eyebrow. “You don’t really think he’s going to fire you, do you?”
“I don’t think he’s going to fire either of us, Tony,” Kate whispered. “I just want to know why you think he’s going to fire you.”
Tony leaned in to lower his voice even further. “Gibbs has a soft spot for you. He’s not going to want us working together, and he’s not going to let you go. So, by process of elimination…”
“Tony, that’s ridiculous! If Gibbs has a soft spot for anyone, it’s you. Look at all the crap he puts up with from you.”
“Hey!” Tony’s voice got louder.
“Shhhh!” Kate grabbed his hand and tugged him until he leaned down over her desk. “It’s true – he’s put up with years of your overgrown frat boy routine. Because he knows there is more to you than that.” She rubbed her thumb over the back of his hand in a conciliatory gesture, and his posture relaxed.
Tony sighed. “Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll just reassign one of us.”
“Why in the hell would I do that?” Gibbs growled as he stomped past. Tony jumped and Kate quickly pulled away her hand. “Both of you. Conference room. Now.”
Tony stood aside and waited for Kate to join him. She gave him a reassuring smile, yet they both followed Gibbs to the elevator as though they were going to face a firing squad. The doors slid shut and Gibbs allowed the elevator to start before pressing the emergency stop, trapping them between floors. “What the hell is wrong with you two?”
“Look, Gibbs,” Kate began. “Tony and I have been seeing each other for about a month now, and it hasn’t interfered with our work at all. So, really there’s no reason for you to be concerned.”
“I disagree.” Gibbs’ voice was taut with barely constrained anger. “I’m very concerned.”
“Boss, I’m sorry – trust me, I’m really sorry – if this upsets you. But I just want to make it clear that this isn’t a fling. Kate and I really care about each other, and we’re not going to end our relationship just to keep a job.”
“Tony!” Kate tried to interrupt, but Tony kept right on.
“So I think it’s best if I hand in my resignation,” he concluded.
Everyone froze for a moment, then Gibbs stepped forward into Tony’s personal space. The two men stared at each other intently – so intently, in fact, that Tony didn’t see the slap to the back of the head coming.
“Ow!” Tony ducked too late and rubbed the back of his head.
“I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that,” Gibbs informed him. “You two are a couple of Grade-A idiots, you know that?”
Tony raised his eyes to Gibbs’ face, still rubbing the sting from the back of his head. “Yes, Boss. But why, exactly?”
“What happened when McGee started dating Abby?” Gibbs asked.
Tony and Kate looked at one another in confusion. “Nothing,” Kate answered.
“Exactly,” Gibbs agreed.
“So are you saying that you don’t have an issue with us dating?” Kate asked hopefully.
“I trust you to be professionals, to do your jobs no matter what goes on in your personal lives.”
“Then why were you so angry this morning?”
“Because I also expect you to trust me. We’re a team – honesty, loyalty, and trust are a necessity in order for us to do our jobs.” Gibbs looked at each of them to make sure he had their full attention. “You should have told me. You should have told all of us.”
“I’m sorry, Gibbs.”
“We’re both sorry.”
Gibbs released the emergency stop and pressed the button for their floor. As the doors slid open, he pressed the button for Abby’s floor and slipped through the doors before they could close.
Tony turned to smile at Kate. “I guess we’re going to go tell Abby now.”
Kate smiled back and reached for his hand. “I guess so.”
