Summary: “Liquid courage?” Kate allowed a single eyebrow to raise, skeptically. “Trying to ply me with drink, are you?” She took a step forward and then grinned widely. “Sounds good.”
“You have to try them on,” Abby stood and practically ran towards down the hallway. “They’re totally hot, and with that skirt you’re wearing…”
Kate flushed at the mention of her incredible short skirt, which she had dragged out of the back of her closet with dread and apprehension. Abby wanted to go to a club. Abby wanted Kate to go with her. Abby told Kate she couldn’t wear her “conservative” clothing, so now she was stuck in a decades-old skirt that had seen far better days, which Abby seemed to love despite (or perhaps because of) its threadbare nature.
And apparently, Kate groaned as Abby skidded to a stop in front of her carrying a pair of lace-up boots (with a stiletto heal), Abby had the perfect pair of shoes to go with it. Not that Kate would begrudge her friend much, and Abby did know the club pretty well (as well as what casual attire would be within its hallowed walls) but … thigh-highs?
“There are some things that cannot be done, even in the name of friendship.” Kate glanced at the shoes in front of her and nodded, once. “Those are a perfect example.”
Abby gasped in shock, holding a hand to her chest and letting it flutter-pulse every few seconds as if to imitate her own heart-beat. After a few seconds, she stopped and looked at her chest in disbelief. “I can’t believe you said that, Kate! My heart is broken, it beats no more!”
“And I shall live to see another day, complete with both my ankles.” She smirked, “a fair trade, I’d say.”
“No!” Abby once again began to let her hand measure of the beats of her heart. She glanced down at the shoes before looking once at Kate’s face, ripe with determination. “Maybe you need a little bit of liquid courage before we descend to the streets of Washington D.C.”
“Liquid courage?” Kate allowed a single eyebrow to raise, skeptically. “Trying to ply me with drink, are you?” She took a step forward and then grinned widely. “Sounds good.”
Kate sidestepped Abby and walked into the petite kitchen. Opening the fridge door, she rummaged around before emerging with a wine-cooler, Raspberry flavored at that. “Ah, my favorite.”
Abby sighed. “I have so much to teach you in the ways of foraging. With my entire liquor collection at your disposal, you pick the cheap stuff with carbonation that I only keep for when I want to watch girly-movies.”
“The carbonation tickles my nose?” Kate attempted to smile seriously before breaking down into a fit of laughter. “Relax, this stuff has a very low alcohol level, maybe 6%. I just want to be clear-headed when we get to the club.”
“It’s a night off, Kate.” Abby tried to explain to her friend. “Night off means you can get drunk, you can get sloppy drunk, you can get falling down drunk and nothing will happen. Do you know why?” Abby leaned forward and whispered into Kate’s ear: “because it’s a night off.”
Kate sighed before setting the bottle down on the counter and walking out of the kitchen. She strode to the couch and sat down, waiting for Abby to venture from the kitchen into the living room. Seconds passed, and Kate began to look around quizzically when Abby entered the room. She was carrying a bottle of wine and a couple glasses, a corkscrew struck between her teeth in a way that reminded Kate of the tango.
Her thoughts were already cloudy without any alcohol—a tango? Kate closed her eyes and shook her head violently before leaning backwards. “Wow, this couch is comfortable.” She opened her eyes, “where’d you get it?”
Abby smiled. “For two hundred bucks on Craigslist. See, there was this boy and he told me to check out his ad on Craigslist, and well,” Abby blushed.
“Boys off craigslist, hmmm” Kate made a sound of disapproval, as was her duty as The Best Friend.
“Well, I met him first and THEN I looked at his ad. Cute, too.” Abby smiled in remembrance.
“If you already knew him, why’d you have to check out his ad?” Kate looked confused, which wouldn’t be helped by the wine glass Abby was handing her.
“He had photos up. Hot photos.” Abby took a sip of wine and sighed appreciatively. “Good wine.”
Kate nodded, absently. She could never be as blasé about meeting guys off-line as Abby was. She was to straight, to conservative, to by-the-book. And it wasn’t a bad thing, at least that’s what she kept telling herself. Following rules wasn’t a bad thing, because then you knew which rules you could or would break in certain situations.
Besides, she had the sneaking suspicion that all the guys online would be a lot like Tony—brash, aggressive, rude and impolite. Not the type of people she could to bring home, even if she wanted to. Which kind of sucked, not that she’d ever admit it. NEVER.
“Please will you wear the boots?” Abby begged, dragging Kate out of her downward spiral. “They’d look so hot with that skirt, and the guys would totally be all over you.”
Kate shook her head and smiled slightly. “Not tonight,” she finally replied before taking a sip of her wine. “Not tonight.”

Kate rushed into the building, holding a piece of newspaper over her head as a makeshift umbrella. Her entire outfit was drenched, her hair hung limp beside her face.
“Nice,” Tony smirked from the elevator across the lobby. “Very professional.”
“Eat me,” Kate responded defiantly.
“Love the wet dog look,” Tony continued.
Kate stomped her foot loudly before turning and heading towards the stairs. Three flights of stairs was vastly superior to riding an elevator with Tony, of all people.
Just as she was about to push the door open, she heard a loud slap followed by “Ow!”.
Turning, she saw Gibbs frowning at Tony. “Keep it shut.” She smiled and walked over. “Hey Gibbs”.
