My computer conked out practically the day after I posted Part I, and I've just gotten everything running again in the past week, but the delay highlighted a plot problem in what was left of the story and the rest of it underwent a near-total rewrite. Then I got all my data back. Go figure. At any rate, here's the rest of the story -- many apologies, and I hope it's worth the wait.
